The Trump administration is reviewing California's high-speed rail project, which is a decade late and is expected to exceed the budget by more than $100 billion without linking San Francisco and Los Angeles to initial expectations. [emphasis, links added]
As Breitbart News reported, President Donald Trump warned that the federal government could spend more than $4 billion on the project, just as he locked down $1 billion for the sick project during his first administration.
this San Francisco Chronicles The report said Transport Secretary Sean Duffy made an appearance in Los Angeles to announce the audit:
U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said Thursday he will conduct a compliance review of $4 billion in funding allocated to California's high-speed rail project – an ambitious, long-delayed plan to pull the Los Angeles bullet train from Los Angeles Send to downtown San Francisco.
The review will “help determine” whether the money should “stick” to the first part of the railway, A U.S. Department of Transportation spokesman said in a press release that the future of the project is at risk.
“If California wants to continue investing, that's great, but we'll see if this project is in the Trump administration,” Duffy said in a speech at Union Station in Los Angeles on Thursday morning. It's worth continuing to invest.” Protesters gathered in the backstage and booed, shouting loudly, “Build the rails!”
Protesters do not represent any real constituency yet. Even in California outside of certain parts of the Central Valley, high-speed rail projects are not popular.
A separate high-speed rail project, operating between the Los Angeles area and Las Vegas, is seen as more positive because it starts with private funding and has the prospect of success – more like a form of entertainment than convenience .
