Dan Castrigano of Burlington, Vermont maintains roots both literally and emotionally.
After years of holidays, weddings and other events, he promised to stop and has not stepped onto the plane since 2019.
Castrigano: “I found that slowing down, especially spending most of my time walking, cycling and taking trains, has brought me great joy.”
Castrigano decided to avoid air travel after calculating his impact on the climate and knowing the impact of the flight that caused more than 85% of carbon emissions.
He said global warming disproportionately harms low-income communities and people of color. As a man who is privileged enough to afford air travel, he feels responsible for taking action.
Castrigano: “I mean, if you have enough money to fly, that will make you the richest crowd on the planet.”
Castrigano hopes to take action on climate change to set an example for his young son.
Castrigano: “He is not on the plane, we don’t eat meat as a family, we ride bikes everywhere. … These are our values as a family, and that’s how he grew up, easy to stomp and take care of our planet.”
