The climate group, founded by billionaire and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, is reportedly cutting some of its workforce, partly because Republicans have won the defender.
An anonymous source told Politico's E&E News that Green Energy Group Breakthrough Energy has fired several workers and plans to eliminate its U.S. policy aspects. Another anonymous source told the media that the last day of the policy team for Breakthrough Energy will be Friday.
An anonymous source told The Outlet that a staff member with charity in groundbreaking energy was also fired. Relatedly, the New York Times reported Wednesday that “dozens” of laying out energy workers were fired, including the group’s entire U.S. team working on policy issues, most of the employees who have partnered with other climate organizations and European departments.
Gates decided that the team is unlikely to have a significant impact on Washington, D.C. after the Republican victory in November, winning control of the White House and two Chambers in Congress.
A Gates spokesman told the New York Times in a statement when asked about the cuts. “His work in this area will continue and is committed to helping promote reliable and affordable clean energy solutions that will allow people everywhere to thrive.”
In February, Breakthrough Energy told its partners it would cut its climate grant budget this year, Heatmap News reported.
Breakthrough Energy was founded by Gates in 2015, and the group’s goal is to “inspire the world to grow and expand the critical solutions we need to achieve net zero emissions so that everyone can enjoy affordable and abundant clean energy.” (Related: Exclusive: Republican representatives announce bills to prevent future presidents from launching “attacks on domestic energy”)
It is worth noting that Gates has supported a variety of clean energy programs over the past few years, including investment in green energy startups and climate change research.
President Donald Trump has been overseeing efforts to revitalize the U.S. energy sector and “release” U.S. energy as part of his broad “energy dominance” agenda. During the campaign, Trump vowed to overturn various green energy policies and regulations previously formulated by the Presidential Administration.
