Survivors evacuated from wildfires may be anxious to return home when officials give them to people.
But experts recommend that people take precautions to stay safe before moving back.
For example, when you get there, look for fallen trees, down silk and swing embers. Check the exterior of the house for structural damage.
Then look inside for signs that can indicate your home is dangerous.
And make sure to check for gas leakage before using any electricity. Experts recommend turning on the flashlight before entering to prevent any unexpected sparks.
When preparing for cleaning, first use a broom to carefully sweep any ash into a pile and dispose of it. Then use a damp cloth mop. And make sure to wear long sleeves, pants and safety gear, as debris and ash can be toxic.
Throw away any exposed food and follow local guidance for running water safe as wildfires can contaminate drinking water.
Finally, take photos of any damage and contact your insurance company as you walk through your home.
As the climate warms, wildfire risks will rise in many parts of the country – so it is very important for everyone to know how to stay safe.
