Rep. Scott Perry (R-PA) proposed legislation on Friday would repeal the renewable fuel standard (RFS), believing it only hurts the environment and raises gasoline prices. [emphasis, links added]
Keystone conservatives unveiled a bill to eliminate RFS and its destructive results, which he believes may help alleviate inflationary pressures on natural gas prices.
“Eliminating RFS is a crucial step in retaining these basic work and reducing inflationary pressures.” Perry said in a written statement to Breitbart News. “By removing this task, we can curb the rising costs of extending household budgets to their limits.”
“While RFS is designed to promote the use of environmentally friendly fuels, the environmental benefits of ethanol, especially in alternative gasoline, are questionable. When evaluating the full environmental impact of increasing corn yields (including the required water, land and energy) It is obvious that RFS has net negative environmental consequences,” He continued.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) noted that Congress created RFS to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and expand the renewable fuel industry while reducing reliance on imported oil.
RFS plans require a certain amount of renewable fuel to replace the amount of fossil fuel in transport fuel, heating or jet fuel.
However, Perry's office believes that RFS has failed to reduce dependence on foreign oil and promote alternatives to environmentally friendly fuels.
The Heritage Foundation points out how to use it Corn-based ethanol in gasoline only raises feed prices for cattle and poultry farmers and transfers valuable farmland from other agricultural uses:
Even within the scope of the mission, we rely on cheap biofuels from foreign sources to meet the requirements. The United States consumed 2.85 billion gallons of biodiesel in 2016, while producing only 1.56 billion gallons of biodiesel in 2016. More than 708 million gallons of biodiesel were imported in 2016, and 448 million gallons were imported from Argentina only.
In fact, of all the biodiesel consumed in the United States in 2016 was actually imported from other countries. Last year, the United States was the overall net exporter of ethanol and a net importer of biodiesel.
“Once biofuels are used as an important tool to mitigate climate change, the United Nations 2007 Intergovernmental Report on Climate Change recognizes Biofuel policies have negative impacts on the lives of the poor, and transferring land to produce biofuels has adverse environmental and climate consequences,” he said. The Heritage Foundation wrote in another paper.
Ethanol in gasoline also tends to have about 30% less energy per unit volume than gasoline, may contain more fuel pollutants than gasoline, and may even damage smaller engines and older cars.
