People with diabetes must carefully monitor and manage their blood sugar levels. But this can be difficult in extreme weather.
Doodle: “There are many factors that affect our blood sugar levels, and some of the big ones are stress, lack of sleep, and not following a normal schedule. This is what happens when extreme weather disasters occur.”
Karen Graffeo, a nonprofit diabetic sister, suffers from type 1 diabetes. She was on an insulin pump and was wearing a continuous glucose monitor, so she said the power outage could be frightening.
Graffeo: “My iPhone runs an insulin pump and a continuous glucose monitor, so I need to make sure if we're off the power for a few days, I need to keep it charged.”
Her insulin needs to be kept cold. So, during the outage, she relied on a neighbor who had a generator to refrigerate it.
For graffiti and others with diabetes, it is important to plan extreme weather ahead of time.
