In a self-storage facility in Egg Harbor, New Jersey, a row of warehouses of a row of storage units are covered with solar panels.
Steve Potter has additional space storage, which owns the facility. He said buildings such as storage facilities, large shops and warehouses often have huge open roofs that are perfect for solar energy.
In urban areas, using this space for urban areas where solar energy may be scarce.
Porter: “You don't put solar panels on the diet floor. You're using spaces that you've already used for something else.”
His company has installed solar panels on more than 800 of its facilities to offset the electricity used in the building.
But at Egg Harbor and eight other New Jersey facilities, additional space storage leases its roof to solar landscapes, which operates community solar projects.
The arrangement provides another source of income for additional space storage while providing local households with affordable clean energy.
Porter: “This makes us a good community partner and people want to stay with us for a long time.”
Therefore, the massive roof of commercial buildings can be used to offset the company's own energy needs and help increase the community's access to solar energy.
