The discovery of green leaf mosses dating back to the Middle Ages (MWP) has been found embedded in Antarctic glacier ice and is now “permanently covered in snow” and “no evidence of melting.” [emphasis, links added]

This affirms a warm MWP, “The summer melt during the MWP is bigger than today.”

According to a new study, it has been found that intact leaves and glacial ice cubes (BCG) with 10 to 13 mm long leaves in length were found in Antarctica Victoria.

The surface of the glacier has not yet been melted. Instead, it is permanently covered with snow.

“It is also worth noting that under current climatic conditions… there is no evidence of melting on the BCG and the surface of the glacier is permanently covered.”

The history of leafy moss samples dates back about 1,000 years ago, in line with the timing of the warm medieval period.

“…At the warm period of the Middle Ages (MWP) 900 to 989 Cal BP, an unprecedented paleo-infiltration event occurred on the surface of the Antarctic glaciers in the Antarctic Glaciers (Northern Victoria, Mainland).

“The period between 831 and 1140 CAL BP is characterized by a decrease in sea ice in the lands of northern Victoria, which is consistent with a brief event in which the warmer conditions occur, with a warmer situation of about 1000 cal bp…''

In modern glaciers, the presence of thousands of historic plants strongly suggests that the climate was warm during the warmer periods of the Middle Ages (and therefore, there was less ice in the glacier).

“For frost mounds in the lake, the largest uplift event provides further support for this short warming period… It was observed that only a few hundred meters from the wellbore B1, dated from 790 to 1070 CAL BP.

“So, past frost bulges recorded on BCG may indicate that summer melts during MWP are greater than today.”

Warmth in the warmth period of the Middle Ages was believed to be powered by ENSO, which is associated with solar activity.

In other words, greenhouse gas concentrations have no identifiable role in this “huge warm pulse event.”

“The MWP in Victoria is reportedly driven primarily by El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), which is related to changes in solar activity through nonlinear dynamics.”
