Last July, when wildfires near Lyon, Colorado, was reportedly fire chief Rob Stumpf and his crew arrived at the scene.
They can see the fires developing rapidly, heading to towns.
Stumpf: “In 90 seconds on the scene, we issued an evacuation order.”
These orders help protect people from what is known as the Stone Canyon fire.
Stumpf said it is becoming increasingly important for the response team and residents to move quickly when they start wildfires, as the fire becomes more extreme and spreading.
Stumpf: “We see preliminary notices, then secondary, tertiary, and then a final mandatory evacuation within minutes.”
As development develops towards prone forests, more houses are at risk.
When he began to crack down on fires in Colorado about 14 years ago, evacuation was usually limited to a few people in remote areas, Stumpf said.
Stumpf: “Now, evacuation of the entire subdivision and the entire town is common due to the speed of spread and the density of development.”
Therefore, it is crucial that people understand the severity of the threat and be prepared.
