People use warm water for everything from scrubbing dishes to relaxing in the bathtub, so a water heater is one of the biggest energy in your home.
But with the latest technology, you can get hot water while saving your utility bills.
Wesley Whited of global consulting firm DNV said the new electric heat pump water heater operates more efficiently than the standard resistance model.
Whited: “They are taking heat out of the air and transferring it to water instead of heating the elements directly, which is the way we have always heated hot water.”
They are most attractive to people living in the Pacific Northwest and California, where hot water is usually heated with electricity rather than natural gas, he said.
Whited: “It’s much easier when you already have a resistive water heater to move to a heat pump water heater because you already have the circuit.”
The upfront cost of equipment is indeed higher. However, buyers usually have kickbacks and incentives. Homeowners can expect to save money over time.
According to the EPA, saving more than $500 a year for families with Energy Star certified heat pump heaters.
By reducing the energy use of your home, you can also help the climate.
