DeSantis spoke about Senate Bill 56 before signing the measure ahead of measures proposed by Republican state Senator Ileana Garcia.
“It protects Floridians from geoengineering and weather modification activities.” DeSantis said in a press conference that realizing it was a concern for the people of his state.
“People are coming to me all the time. We don't do that in any of our state agencies. There is no license for the entire modern history of Florida. We don't have any licenses, but people are concerned about it. Because you have all these people saying, well, the way to fight climate change is to inject these things and stop the sun and do all of them,DeSantis said.
“And I'm like, no, okay, no, no, we're not doing that in Florida. We're in the sun, you don't need any of it right now,” he said.
“So, this is not done by Florida, I can tell you. But that’s what you hear there. It’s kind of like a small family industry where people think they can solve global warming by putting things in the atmosphere.” He said, adding that Garcia's bill “really slammed the door.”
“Any of these efforts are reaching Florida, so you don’t have to worry about this advance. And I know there are some back and forth in this bill. I know the House leadership is trying to water it…but I can say that this powerful bill ended up passing and prevailing,The governor continued.
The summary from the DeSantis office added that the measure “also prohibits injection, release or dispersion of chemicals or substances into the atmosphere for a clear purpose of changing weather, temperature, climate or sunlight intensity.”
Violators may face “third-degree felony charges, up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $100,000.”
Under the bill, by October 1, 2025, all public airports must “Report to the Florida Department of Transportation any aircraft equipped with weather modifications or geoengineering equipment.”
