A stern declaration is expected to end the gathering entitled UN Ocean Third Ocean Conference (UNOC 3), telling the world that it must do more and donate billions of dollars to save the planet, as part of the expected plan of ocean action.
Conference Secretary General Li Junhua told reporters on Tuesday that he hoped it would not be a regular meeting, but a “critical opportunity” to accelerate action and mobilize people from all departments and around the world, AP report.
The conference, co-sponsored by France and Costa Rica, was held on the French Riviera from 7 June to 13 June, with Golden Beach and luxury hotels providing background.
More than 60 world leaders, dozens of ministers, about 4,000 government officials and 6,000 civil society members are expected to be convened, Lee told the Associated Press.
The meeting plan included 10 plenary meetings, 10 themed roundtables, blue areas reserved for official delegations, and a series of parallel forums held during the five-day negotiations.
Organizers expect attendees to make a total of $100 billion in new funding to address climate issues.
Conference participants are expected to adopt a harsh statement saying the action is not enough to develop rapidly and cannot address the impact of the “triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution.”
The final draft says: “We emphasize the central role of a healthy and resilient ocean in maintaining life on Earth, ensuring global food security and supporting billions of lives.”
