Many houses burn a lot of fossil fuels, from fuel consumption furnaces to gas furnaces.
Switching to electrical appliances such as heat pumps and induction furnaces will help reduce climate warm pollution caused by burning fossil fuels.
In Brooklyn, Massachusetts, a group called Electify Brookline wrote a series of guides to help residents get started.
“It seems like there is so much information to sift out that getting reliable, scrutinized, comprehensive guides seems to be the best way we can help residents start their electrification journey.”
Kathleen Scanlon is an architect and member of the town’s Zero Emission Advisory Committee.
The guide answers questions like how heat pumps work and how to get rebates for electric car chargers.
They are available online for free, as well as a list of contractors with electrification experience.
Scanlon said people don't need to electrify the entire house at once. Over time, her family has been slowly weaning from fossil fuel interruptions.
Scanlon: “Like any other family, we are learning which technology works for us and changing the system’s technology as needed – and planning so that we can be prepared when we need to replace them.”
