[Clip from the second movement, “Gloria”]
From Gregorian hymns to gospel hymns, Christian liturgy has long been inspired by Christian liturgy.
This spring, a new chorus based on the Catholic masses premiered at Loyola University in Chicago.
It was inspired by the encyclopedia of former Pope Francis, laudato si', which urged the world to take action on climate change.
Lee: “I’ve always been interested in writing something about our environmental and climate crisis.”
Dongryul Lee formed Missa Laudato Si', conducted by the University Choir and the New Earth Ensemble of the Ecological Project.
He not only used the traditional Latin mass writing.
Lee: “But other texts that can connect us to this question…”
…Including part of the Pope’s letter, a list of endangered species, and poems by the Korean Zen poet Shiva Ryu. Lee weaves these texts together to help people reflect on climate change.
