Transcript:
Every day, thousands of diesel trucks pass through small villages and other Latino communities in Southwest Chicago, and the pollution they emit can worsen asthma and other diseases.
“We've seen through conversations with residents…Diesel truck pollution and transportation are a big problem.”
Melanie Minuche is with the Little Village Environmental Justice Organization.
Her group is part of a coalition that is pushing Illinois to adopt advanced cleaning truck rules. The policy will require truck manufacturers to accelerate the transition to electric trucks and other zero-emission vehicles.
The Alliance conducted a recent study that showed it could save lives.
Northwestern University researchers have studied the impact of replacing about half of medium and heavy vehicles in the Chicago area with zero-emission vehicles.
They found that the city’s annual pollution reduction will result in about 500 premature deaths and 600 new childhood asthma cases.
“We believe that advanced clean truck rules are very important to ensure that communities in the southwest can access the cleaner air breathing.”
…Improve the health of the people and the planet.
