Power plants burn coal, oil and gas emission pollution, harming climate and human health.
Novinska-Lois: “We know … people get sick from exposure to fossil fuels.”
Abby Novinska-Lois joins the Healthy Climate Wisconsin, a group of healthcare professionals promote climate action.
The team collaborated in a recent report on the health effects of two proposed gas plants in Wisconsin.
It shows that over 30 years, contamination at these plants will result in hundreds of premature deaths and increase the risk of heart attacks, new cases of asthma and emergency medical visits.
In areas near the facilities, the hazards are the most obvious. But the pollution particles caused by the wind can also deteriorate the air quality.
Novinska-Lois: “There is no border for air pollution…so we’ll see a lot of pollution in Michigan and then almost all of the Northeast of the United States will suffer from health effects.”
Gas is sometimes promoted as a clean alternative to coal. But Novinska-Lois said the study shows that from coal to gas is not a good way for people to be healthy.
Novinksa-Lois: “It will continue to undermine our lives and our communities’ ability to thrive…We do need to move towards clean energy.”
