Research shows that most Americans are worried about global warming. And there is broad support for climate solutions and policies, such as taxing companies for their carbon pollution and transition to clean energy.
Newell: “The reality is that the vast majority of Americans … want action on climate change. We want solar and wind turbines.”
But Philip Newell, a climate action against the disinformation coalition, said many people were unaware of it.
One reason, he said, is that fossil fuel companies lead lobbying efforts and PR campaigns, making people think climate solutions are more controversial than they actually are.
Newell: “It makes you think, ‘Oh, it’s not welcome, so we shouldn’t be loud, speak out, proudly advocate for climate solutions.”
He said the popularity of climate action would lead people to openly support clean energy, advocate for climate policy, and even talk about climate change with friends.
Newell: “Just like yelling like you’re talking about, you can actually be very confident to talk about climate change with most friends and neighbors because that’s 60%, 70%, 80% of Americans support these issues. So, you won’t be afraid, you won’t be bullied by false information, not bullying these issues.”
