Widespread thunderstorms have returned this afternoon and are slowly moving south and southwest, producing heavy downpours. These thunderstorms form within an upper-level trough, behind an exiting low-pressure system to the east. Light winds aloft won't push the storm any time soon, so heavy rain and frequent lightning will be the biggest concerns. Gusty winds are also possible as the storm weakens.
While no severe weather is expected during the evening, there are reports of a funnel cloud near Freeport, Illinois (Stephenson County). These types of funnel clouds, called cold air funnels, usually don't last long and rarely reach the ground. However, if you do see a funnel cloud, you will need to seek shelter until the funnel cloud lifts.
Scattered thunderstorms will continue throughout the night, with overall coverage gradually waning as the atmosphere becomes more stable. Remaining low levels of moisture in the atmosphere will increase the risk of fog areas forming, similar to what many people woke up to on Monday morning.
