The Indian Navy braved severe weather conditions on Wednesday to successfully evacuate a seriously injured Chinese sailor from the bulk carrier Zhongshanmen, 200 nautical miles (about 370 kilometers) from Mumbai.
The Indian Navy said the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center in Mumbai received a distress call from the bulk carrier on Tuesday night and requested the immediate evacuation of a 51-year-old seafarer who had suffered severe bleeding.
In response to medical emergencies, a Sea King helicopter took off from the Indian Naval Air Station Shekla at 0550 hours on Wednesday.
“The situation was further complicated by adverse weather conditions with wind speeds exceeding 45 knots and severe rocking of the ship as there was no continuous deck. The patient was successfully airlifted back to the air station from the bridge wing,” an Indian Navy spokesperson said in a news release on , and was subsequently transferred to the hospital for further medical care.
The Indian Coast Guard's INS Samrat was also diverted to provide assistance.
“The safe and timely evacuation of the patients was the result of coordinated actions between the MRCC (MBI) and the Indian Navy,” the spokesperson said.
