As our site approached 20 years of operation, financial conditions coupled with inflation and everything else forced us to move to a new model to keep the site active. We have never charged for content before, preferring to use advertising to sustain our operations. However, we haven't been able to generate much revenue from advertising since Google AdWords banned us from serving content they didn't like a few years ago.
We recently tried to add some advertising from other sources that don't rely on Google AdWords, which basically has a monopoly on online advertising, but the results didn't meet our expectations.
Therefore, we will start offering premium content only through subscription. The good news is that you don't have to opt in, most WUWT content will remain free as always. However, if you want some exclusive content, insider information, and more access, these new subscription-only features are a great option. We need to do this to keep the lights on. Many other websites have adopted this model, including some popular climate websites and social media. So, what we're doing is not unprecedented.
There are four levels, arranged from most comprehensive to least comprehensive:
1. VIP members can enjoy weekly online meetings, weekly newsletters, exclusive content and comments
2. Premium members get access to weekly newsletters, exclusive content and commentary
3. No advertising sponsors, pay monthly or annually to post a review (one month free)
4. Free registration includes comments (but there are ads)
