Phoenix(AZFamily) — It’s been a crazy week in Arizona, with high winds and rain causing a lot of damage.
There's more to come.
Many homeowners are now busy trimming their trees before the next storm.
Mark Ryan is president of the Idylwild community in central Phoenix, which has a large park surrounded by many large trees.
Homeowners here have long realized the importance of cutting down trees every summer, he said.
“These are old trees, about 100 years old,” Ryan said. “The extra weight on these trees has been building up over the years and it's blown away large tracts of trees that need to be cleared and it's a huge disaster.”
It's not uncommon for large trees to fall onto homes, cars and other personal property during the monsoon, but many disasters can be avoided if homeowners take some simple precautions.
Rob Dillingham of Jason's Tree Service says the best time to prune and thin trees is May or June, but there's still time to send someone out to reduce the risk of severe storm damage.
“If you get another storm next week, if you do nothing, you could be in really bad shape, potentially with a broken limb or part of the tree,” Dillingham said. “It's going to be very expensive to try to repair the tree after the fact. You'd better do it now.
The cost of pruning and thinning large trees is not cheap, ranging from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars.
But Dillingham said it's still cheaper than repairing damage caused by a storm.
Ryan and his neighbors say they will have more peace of mind for the rest of the summer.
“It's better to get it done early,” Ryan said.
