AAP leader Manish Sisodia is expected to walk out of Tihar jail between 7 pm and 8 pm on Friday.
The Supreme Court on Friday granted bail to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and former Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia in corruption and money laundering cases filed against him by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau Regarding the now defunct Delhi excise tax policy. At this point, Sisodia will be released from prison in 17 months.
A bench of Justices BR Gavai and KV Viswanathan on August 6 reserved judgment on Sisodia's plea and granted bail to Sisodia without attaching any conditions. The order will be uploaded by the Supreme Court and sent to Derry's Louth Avenue Court, where bail will be paid.
Bail orders will be sent by post from Louth Avenue Court to Tihar Jail. The file will then be processed in Tihar Jail to pave the way for Sisodia's release from jail. He is expected to be released between 7 and 8 p.m.
Here are the key quotes from the bail plea of the former Delhi education minister.
- The Supreme Court said the applicant was denied the right to a speedy trial.
- Justice Gavai allowed Sisodia's appeal and said, “The order of the Delhi High Court has been quashed and stayed. He was granted bail in both the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) cases.
- The Supreme Court also dismissed oral pleas by the CBI and ED seeking restraint on Sisodia from visiting the Delhi Secretariat or discharging official duties like Kejriwal. “These conditions were given to the chief minister. That cannot be the case in this case,” Justice BR Gavai told ASG SV Raju.
