A bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Sanjay Kumar said: “Will you ban girls from wearing bindi or tilak?”
The Supreme Court on Friday stayed a notification issued by a private university in Mumbai banning students from wearing turbans, badges or caps on campus till November 18. The judge said: “Would you ban a girl from wearing a bindi or a tilak?” Kumar said.
“What is this? Don’t impose such a rule.. What is this? Do not disclose religious beliefs? Justice Khanna asked the college’s rationale for imposing this rule so as not to reveal the religious beliefs of students.
“Wouldn't their names betray religious beliefs? Would you ask for numbers to identify them? Justice Kumar asked.
