An Election Commission delegation led by Kumar will be on a three-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir to assess the government and security agencies' preparedness for the polls.
Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar on Friday said the Election Commission is committed to conducting polls in Jammu and Kashmir at the earliest and will not allow any internal or external force to derail the electoral process.
Addressing a press conference here, Kumar said all parties in Jammu and Kashmir were “strongly opposed” to holding assembly elections.
“We are committed to conducting polls in Jammu and Kashmir at the earliest and we will not let any internal or external force derail the elections,” Kumar said.
“All political parties in Jammu and Kashmir are vigorously seeking to hold assembly elections as soon as possible,” he added.
An Election Commission delegation led by Kumar is on a three-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir to review the preparedness of the government and security agencies for the conduct of elections.
On the second day of the visit on Friday, a EC delegation including Election Commissioners Gyanesh Kumar and SS Sandhu met with Jammu and Kashmir Chief Secretary Atal Dullo and Union Territory Police Chief, officials said. RR Swain discussed.
Jammu and Kashmir has not held assembly polls since 2014.
However, after Jammu and Kashmir was bifurcated into a union territory in August 2019, the assembly polls could not be held due to various reasons, including the completion of delimitation work in 2022.
In December last year, the Supreme Court directed the Center to complete the election process by September 30, 2024.
