A Tihar jail officer has been suspended for misconduct after a video purportedly showing him brandishing a pistol at a party surfaced on social media, officials said on Friday.
In the 18-second video clip, Deepak Sharma, who serves as assistant superintendent of police at Mandoli Jail, is seen at a party hosted by a political leader in East Delhi , swaying to the Bollywood song “Khalnayak Hoon main”. Two men can be seen dancing with him.
According to witnesses, someone at the party fired shots into the air. But the police could not verify it.
An official said Sharma has been suspended for misconduct and a fact-finding inquiry has been made to the superintendent of Jail No. 15 where he is staying.
A senior police officer said they have also written to the Delhi Police's licensing department seeking necessary action in the matter.
Sharma is popular on social media, with 440,000 followers on Instagram, where he often posts photos of himself working out at the gym.
As jail superintendent, Sharma was involved in the raid on the barracks of suspected fraudster Sukesh Chandrashekar in Tihar Jail.
Mandoli Jail is a part of Tihar Jail complex.
