Assam police chief GP Singh said the Center has issued directives banning anyone from entering India from Bangladesh
Assam police are on high alert at the India-Bangladesh border to ensure that no one can enter the state illegally in view of unrest in the neighboring country, a senior police officer said on Saturday.
Superintendent of Police GP Singh said the Center has issued directives prohibiting anyone from entering India from Bangladesh.
“The Border Security Force is the first line of defense at the border and the Assam Police as the second line of defense is also on high alert,” Singh told reporters at a book launch event here.
“However, there is a proviso that Indian passport holders (mainly students and businessmen) will be allowed entry if their documents are found to be valid after due verification,” the DGP said.
The Center has also issued another directive that citizens of neighboring countries will be escorted back to Bangladesh through secure corridors after proper verification of passports and visas, he added.
“Besides these activities, no one has entered the state… Assam Police is conducting joint patrols with the BSF,” he said.
Regarding the measures taken for the subsequent Independence Day celebrations in Assam, the Attorney General said that appropriate measures have been taken to ensure foolproof security in the state.
“Police have been instructed to increase security at the parade ground,” he said.
Following reports of a group of ULFA(I) militants along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border, top police officials recently visited several districts in Upper Assam to review security arrangements.
“We reviewed the current situation with the police, army, Central Reserve Police Force and Assam Rifles and discussed necessary steps to be taken to neutralize the group,” he said.
He urged the group not to indulge in violence and create disturbances at a time when increased investment would bring economic prosperity to the state.
“If ULFA(I) has something to say, both the Center and the state governments are ready to hold talks with them,” the DGP added.
