Former external affairs minister Natwar Singh passed away on Saturday evening after a long illness, family sources said. He is 93 years old.
They said he died at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram near Delhi, where he had been staying for the past few weeks. Singh was born in 1931 in Bharatpur district of Rajasthan.
He was a career diplomat who brought a wealth of diplomatic experience to his political career and was a prolific writer on subjects ranging from the life of a Maharaja to the nuances of foreign affairs.
During his illustrious career, he wore many hats and for his services to the country, the former external affairs minister was awarded the Padma Shri in 1984.
“His son is in hospital and more family members have come to Delhi from his hometown to attend the last rites planned to be performed in Delhi. He was not in good health for some time,” a family source told PTI late on Saturday night .
Sources said he died late Saturday night.
A former MP, Singh served as India's external affairs minister during the 2004-05 UPA-I government led by then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
He also served as ambassador to Pakistan from 1966 to 1971 and served in the office of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Veteran politician Randeep Surjewala posted a tribute on X to the former foreign minister.
“The news of the death of former External Affairs Minister Natwar Singh Ji is saddening. May God grant his family the strength to bear this loss and bring peace to the departed soul.
Singh has also written several books, including “The Nehru Legacy: A Tribute in Memory” and “My China Diary 1956-88.”
His autobiography is titled “One Life Isn't Good Enough.”
