Curacale's Butterfly Park is open to the public on Sunday, with businesses and educational institutions able to visit from Monday to Saturday.
The Butterfly Park located at Vellalore Kulakarai in Coimbatore district has been opened to the public and the park is free and open to everyone. Since 2017, Coimbatore Pond Conservation Organization has cleaned the water channels of Vellalore Pond and diverted water to the pond. Various projects then began in an attempt to turn the pond into a model pond.
In addition to this, with the help of the Nature and Butterfly Society team, they conducted a year-long butterfly survey in the pond. Among them, 103 species of butterflies have been discovered and recorded in Vellalore Pond. The Coimbatore Pond Conservation Organization decided to set up a butterfly park on the banks of the pond to improve the living environment of various organisms, protect butterfly species, and raise public awareness of the living environment of various organisms.
The park was constructed at a cost of Rs 6.6 million with permission from the Ministry of Water Resources and financial support from private companies. The Butterfly Park is open to schools and college students from Monday to Saturday and to the public on Sundays.
In this regard, Sujay of the Coimbatore Pond Conservation Committee said that the Coimbatore Pond Conservation Organization was established by volunteers. “In 2017, after the Jallikattu protests, we created a group on Facebook to plan to save the pond. He further said that they grew several herbal and medicinal plants near the pool. “We planted herbs and medicinal plants in this place next to the pond. After that, butterflies started coming into the park. We then collaborated with the Nature and Butterfly Association to record these butterflies.
According to a year-long butterfly census, there are 103 species of butterflies in the Vellalore tank. A book titled “Butterflies of Velalore Wetlands” was also published to spread the message. “Now that the park is open, the public is only allowed here on Sundays. On other days, we are open to university students, high school students and documentary filmmakers.
