Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh is famous for its busy Indira Gandhi Zoo, which is always packed with tourists. Public holidays and weekends mean huge crowds at the zoo, with visitors spending days looking at the various animals and clicking pictures of them. Just like other zoos, each animal has its own unique way of life, including how to care for them. However, Indira Gandhi Zoo goes to great lengths to provide a unique lifestyle to the elephants in the zoo.
At Visakhapatnam Zoo, elephants are properly cared for and taken care of by their caregivers. From the moment the giant animals wake up in the morning until they go to bed at night, caregivers ensure they receive the best possible care. They make sure the elephants get food regularly, have enough time to move around, and then rest. Upon arriving at the zoo in the morning, the first thing the rangers do is check on the elephants and inspect the entire area where they are walking.
In interviews with Local18, caregivers explained their day-to-day life with elephants. As soon as they wake up, their teeth are brushed. At 10am they are given about 5kg of bran and then given a leisurely stroll in the outdoor enclosure where they can roam and relax. At 11 am they were fed again, this time ragi porridge. Give the colossus a bath at noon and then feed it jaggery and grass. At 4pm they were brushed again, given a good bath and then brought in.
If the largest land animal develops any health problems, a physical examination by a veterinarian is immediately performed. Visakhapatnam Zoo currently houses four elephants, two male elephants named Raju and Krishna, and two female elephants named Saraswati and Lakshmi. Elephants are known to be intelligent animals, and these behemoths respond when people call their names.
