Happy Independence Day 2024: India will celebrate its 78th Independence Day on Thursday, August 15. On August 14 and 15 of the same year, British India was divided into Pakistan and India. This was an important day in the country's liberation war.
The theme of this year's 78th Independence Day is “Viksit Bharat”. The name was decided keeping in mind the government's vision of transforming India into a developed nation by 2047.
On the occasion, President Drupadi Murmu will deliver his annual address to the nation on Wednesday, August 14.
Independence Day 2024: When and where to watch the president’s speech
Similar to last year, the President's address to the nation will be telecast in Hindi and English on Doordarshan channel from 7 pm.
The speech will be telecast through Doordarshan regional channel and telecast on All India Radio (AIR).

People who wish to hear President Droupadi Murmu speak in their native language can tune in to AIR's regional live broadcast, which is scheduled to begin at 9:30 p.m.
The talk will also be streamed live on Doordarshan's YouTube channel.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the nation on the morning of August 15.
President's Address to the Nation
Droupadi Murmu created history when she became the first tribal woman to be appointed to the highest constitutional post in India in July 2022. Mu delivered a powerful oratory speech to the nation.
In his speech, the President discussed various ways in which India can progress. She said India has successfully turned obstacles into opportunities, with strong gross domestic product growth.
Murmu also discussed developments in the fields of science and education, citing the National Education Policy 2020 and the successful launch of the Chandrayaan-3 mission.
The President did not forget to prioritize women’s empowerment and urged everyone to take necessary steps to protect the environment locally, nationally and internationally.
78th Independence Day
Every year, flag-raising ceremonies are held across the country to celebrate Independence Day. People sang the national anthem and participated in drills and cultural programmes. After Prime Minister Narendra Modi attends the flag-hoisting ceremony at the Red Fort in Old Delhi, a procession involving the police and the army will be organized. Some people fly kites as a symbol of freedom.
The Prime Minister addressed the nation and recalled some of India's landmark achievements last year. He also highlighted the challenges ahead and set goals for a better future.
