Silchar Medical College and Hospital's advice drew flak on social media, with people calling it 'misogynistic'
Amid protests against the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old female trainee PG doctor at RG Kar MCH in Kolkata, a government medical college in Assam has issued an advisory to female doctors and students, asking them to “avoid the following Situation: All alone.” The suggestion by Silchar Medical College and Hospital drew flak on social media, with people calling it “misogynistic”.
The notification stated that in view of the tragic incident that occurred at RG Kar Medical College, Kolkata, the hospital administration deemed it necessary to issue the advisory.
“Female doctors, students and staff should generally avoid remote, poorly lit and sparsely populated areas. Female doctors, students and staff should avoid being alone as much as possible.
“Avoid leaving the campus late at night or at odd hours. All dormitory boundaries should adhere to the dormitory norms and regulations set by the college and administration. Be cautious and avoid associating with people who appear to be unknown or of a suspicious nature,” the document further states.
The notice also requires female doctors to “keep their emotions stable while on duty, remain alert to their surroundings, and interact politely with the public to avoid attracting unnecessary attention from criminals.”
The proposal drew heavy criticism on campus, with students demanding that authorities improve security arrangements instead of allowing them to stay in their rooms.
The college's Junior Doctors Association condemned the advice, calling the document's language “disturbing”. new delhi tv reported.
Meanwhile, the strike continues in many parts of the country over the rape and murder of female PG trainee doctors. As per the order passed by the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday, a team of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the investigation of the case.
