FORDA announces decision to resume strike and says it is 'shocked and distressed' by violence at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital
The Federation of Resident Doctors' Associations (FORDA) on Thursday decided to resume the strike, hours after unidentified miscreants vandalized Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital where a trainee doctor was brutally raped and murdered last week.
Two days ago, the doctors' association decided to call off the strike after meeting Union Health Minister JP Nadda.
Announcing its decision to resume the strike, FORDA said it was “shocked and distressed” by the violence at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
“In light of the recent disturbing events at RG Kar Medical College, the Federation of Resident Doctors' Associations (FORDA) addresses our colleagues, the medical community and the public with renewed resolve… We acknowledge that our previous decision to call off the strike was based on this The ministry's assurances, made in good faith, have caused pain and disappointment in our community and we accept responsibility for the widespread dissatisfaction it has caused.
“The events that have followed, particularly last night's violence, have shocked and distressed us all. This is a dark chapter for our profession and we strongly condemn the failure of federal and state governments during this crisis. Ability to deliver on commitments and ensure the safety of healthcare professionals.
FORDA announced it would resume the strike immediately and said it was working on an action plan with other RDAs.
FORDA Cancel Stirring
FORDA announced its decision to end the unrest on Tuesday and said its demands, including an assurance that the Central Healthcare Protection Act was passed to curb attacks on medical personnel, had been met.
“An important outcome of the meeting was that the health minister agreed to set up a committee with the participation of FORDA to formulate the Central Protection Act. The ministry has assured that the work will start within the next 15 days,” FORDA said in a statement.
RG Kar Medical College vandalized
Unidentified miscreants entered the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in the early hours of Thursday and vandalized parts of the medical facility, where the body of a female doctor was found last week.
The incident occurred during a midnight protest by women against the rape and murder of a hospital doctor.
A group of nearly 40 people, allegedly disguised as protesters, entered the hospital building, vandalized property and threw rocks at police, prompting police to fire tear gas to disperse the mob, according to police.
