Amid fierce protests over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday summoned four doctors from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
According to ANI sources, the CBI will question these PGTs (PG trainees) about what happened on the night of the incident. Earlier in the day, accused Sanjoy Roy was brought out of the CBI Special Crime Branch at CGO Complex in Kolkata and underwent a medical examination.

On August 9, a postgraduate trainee doctor was raped and murdered while on duty at a Kolkata hospital. The horrific details shocked the nation, leading to strikes and protests by the medical community and citizens across the country, including outside Kolkata hospitals. Police said that on the evening of August 14, a mob of 5,000 to 7,000 people broke into RG Kar Hospital, ransacked the hospital and attacked protesting doctors.
Currently, doctors across the country have intensified their protests over the incident, demanding the safety of medical staff. An official statement issued by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Thursday said that doctors of modern medicine have announced a nationwide suspension of services from 6 am on Saturday (August 17) to 6 am on Sunday (August 18).

Meanwhile, Socialist Unity Center of India (Communist) (SUCI-C) activists were detained during a 12-hour general strike in Kolkata on Friday.

Dr Shahriar Alam, member of SUCI (Communist Party), said, “Today's strike has had a huge impact. People have responded to our call spontaneously. In the entire Siliguri area like the medical college, people have not come out of their vehicles and have not opened their doors. Okay. Say, the impact is very good. We call this strike to protest against the heinous incident that happened at RG Kar Medical College.

In Delhi, junior doctors and medical students at RML Hospital staged a protest against rape and murder. Doctors are also expected to gather at Nirman Bhavan later in the day for a larger protest. Dr Akash of RML Hospital said, “I appeal to all doctors and the general public to contact Nirman Bhawan in large numbers so that we can peacefully raise our issues before the government and offer condolences to our colleagues who lost their lives in Bangladesh Justice. We also want to tell our protesting friends in Bengal that they are not alone in this fight and all doctors across the country stand with them… We demand the government to enact a central protection law. The protests will continue until the government cannot guarantee that we will take concrete measures.

Dr Samik Shabedi of Gandhi Medical College, a protester in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, said: “We are all scared after this incident. The situation here is not bad as the hospital has been renovated.
