The body of a 17-year-old Dalit girl was found hanging from a ceiling fan at a skill center run by the Christian Missionary Trust, police said on Monday.
The victim, Madhu Bharti, was a resident of Darabukali village in Kushinagar district, they said.
Police said she had been working as an assistant at the skill center 'Karunalaya' run by the Christian Missionary Trust in Hariyawan area of the city for the past one year.
Additional SP Tejveer Singh said the trust, which has been functioning for 22 years, provides skills training in sewing, embroidery, weaving and computer education to young girls. The Trust is led by Sister Manisha and three other nuns who impart these skills.
Singh said Madhu was initially employed in a school run by the same trust in Kushinagar and was brought to Badoshi a year ago to assist in the running of Karunalaya School.
The trust informed police at midnight on Sunday that Madhu had allegedly hanged himself in his room.
The police rushed to the scene, broke in the door and found Madhu's body hanging from the fan.
Singh said a team of two doctors conducted an autopsy on Monday and confirmed that the death was caused by hanging. The body was later handed over to her father Sudama Bharti and sent to Kushinagar.
He said the family has yet to file a formal complaint.
The police have seized Madhu's mobile phone and are investigating the details of the call to investigate the circumstances of her death. Authorities are also interviewing individuals associated with the Karunalaya Trust to gather more information.
