A two-year-old boy in a remote village in Meghalaya's West Garo Hills district was found to have polio, or symptoms of the disease, prompting health authorities to launch an investigation, officials said on Wednesday.

“A boy suffering from polio symptoms was detected during routine surveillance yesterday. He has been sent to Goalpara in Assam for treatment,” a senior doctor from the Directorate of Health Services told PTI.

He said a team of doctors from the WHO had also arrived in Tikrila village to collect samples.
The village where the suspected cases were found is one of the clusters with a large number of unvaccinated residents, the official said.
Poliomyelitis, commonly known as poliomyelitis, is a highly contagious disease caused by the poliovirus.
