The false information stated that police would provide free transportation to women between 10 pm and 6 am.
Responding to viral news circulating online, the Karnataka Police late on Thursday clarified that claims of a new free travel scheme for women were baseless. The false information stated that the police would provide free transportation services to women between 10 pm and 6 am, and encouraged single women to call the helpline number 1091 or 7837018555 if they cannot find a car.
The department's official Twitter account refuted the claim and said: “Caution!! Call the control room between 10pm and 6am. News is circulating online that women are traveling for free. This is false. Call 112 Seeking emergency assistance…”
Attention!! If you call the control room between 10pm and 6am and the message “Women travel free” is displayed, this message is fake. Please dial 112 for emergency assistance. pic.twitter.com/fEimJetDpB— Karnataka Police (@KarnatakaCops) August 22, 2024
Police stressed that there are currently no such travel plans and urged citizens to call 112 in emergencies. The city police statement reiterated that the viral message was a hoax.
