Prime Minister Modi's remarks came as thousands of women across the country took to the streets to demand justice in the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor in Kolkata.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday that the safety of women in India was of paramount importance and he had repeatedly told state governments that “crimes against women are unforgivable crimes”.
Addressing the Lakhpati Didi Sammelan in Jalgaon, Maharashtra, Prime Minister Modi said, “Apart from empowering mothers, sisters and daughters, their safety is also the top priority of the country. The prime minister added that the guilty should be pardoned, as should anyone who helped them in any way. Whether in a hospital, school, government or police system, any level of negligence must be addressed and everyone involved held accountable.
