A pistol without a magazine was found in the school bag of a 10-year-old student in Najafgarh, Delhi, police said on Sunday.
They said the boy thought it was a toy and brought it to school.
According to a senior police officer, the incident took place at a private school in Deepak Vihar area on Saturday, following which the Najafgarh police station received a call.
Upon arriving at the school, police discovered that a student from Class 6 had his father's licensed pistol in his bag. The officer said the pistol did not have a magazine.
The boy's mother was called by the school management and said her husband was in possession of the licensed pistol.
“The woman stated that her husband had died several months ago and that she had the handgun outside and stored it at the police station,” the officer said.
The boy told police he thought it was a toy, the officer added.
Police verified the pistol's license, found it to be valid, and determined no apparent crime had been committed in the incident.
“This pistol was stored in the police warehouse by the boy's mother that day,” the officer said.
