The CBI on Sunday conducted a marathon 12-hour search at the residence of former principal of RG Kar Medical College Sandip Ghosh and others and seized important documents related to alleged financial irregularities.
Days after a trainee doctor was raped and murdered at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Sunday conducted raids at the residences of former principal Sandip Ghosh, former medical superintendent Sanjay Vashisth and 13 others in the city. and surrounding areas. A total of 14 locations were searched for suspected financial irregularities at the institute.
The cases against Ghosh and three Kolkata private entities – Ma Tara Traders in Madhya Jhorehat, Banipur, Howrah; Eshan Cafe in Belgachia and 4/1 in Khama Louha were registered with the CBI on the directions of the Calcutta High Court. During the operation, the business premises of all these entities listed in the FIR were also searched.
Financial irregularities in RG KAR Medical College: Highlights
- According to a report by the Press Trust of India, the Anti-Corruption Department of India's Central Bureau of Investigation, accompanied by central forces, arrived at Ghosh's residence at around 6 a.m. on August 25, but waited for nearly an hour and a half before he opened the door.
- At nearly 8 a.m., at least seven officials from the central investigation agency began interrogating Ghosh. Meanwhile, other CBI officials questioned former MSVP (Medical Superintendent and Vice-Chancellor) Sanjay Vashisth and another professor of the medical institution's forensic department, among others.
- Another team of the CBI also searched the former principal's office and went to the canteen of the academic building. The homes and premises of those who provide supplies for hospital management and patient care were also searched.
- The search operation lasted more than 12 hours before investigative agencies emerged at around 8:50 pm with piles of documents reportedly seized from the scene. When asked about the evidence, a CBI official told reporters: “rare,” (there are many).
