The work done by cooperatives benefits farmers.
A team from Mizoram came to visit and learn about the activities of Nilgiri Cooperative Society.
The Nilgiris region plays an important role not only in tourism but also in agriculture in Tamil Nadu. A variety of vegetables such as potatoes, beans, beetroots, cauliflower, carrots and broccoli are grown here. In this case, the Nilgiris Cooperative Marketing Association is doing the work of selling vegetables grown by farmers here without any middlemen.
Therefore, the farmers have benefited greatly from the work done by the cooperative in the district. Therefore, Nilgiri cooperatives are closely watched by many states. Meanwhile, a team from Mizoram came to observe the activities of the Nilgiri cooperative.
In Mizoram, the new government led by the Chief Minister who recently took charge on behalf of the Mizoram People's Movement has formed the Agricultural Market Stabilization Fund Management Committee headed by the Minister of Farmers Welfare Cooperatives. The state government is committed to ensuring a stable market for Mizoram's most important agricultural products such as ginger, turmeric, miso chilli and jaggery to stabilize agricultural production and ensure fair and remunerative prices for farmers in the state.
Following this, the Mizoram government sent a six-member senior team to Tamil Nadu, led by Pi Ramdinliani, IAS, Agriculture, Agriculture Welfare and Horticulture Departments. It ordered a study into the organizational activities and success stories of the Nilgiris Cooperative Marketing Association in the region, which works to ensure that farmers get fair and remunerative prices for their produce.
The working practices and roles of Nilgiris Cooperative Marketing Association are explained in detail in the study. Dayalan, joint secretary of cooperative societies, said Mizoram officials had come to inspect the activities of a well-functioning cooperative marketing association in the Nilgiris district.
