Police said 64-year-old Upadhyay accidentally fell from the fourth floor of the building to the second floor and suffered serious head injuries.
Senior journalist Umesh Upadhyay died after falling from the fourth floor while inspecting renovation work in southwest Delhi's Vasant Kunj area on Sunday, police said.
A senior police officer said that 64-year-old Upadhyay, the elder brother of former Delhi BJP president Satish Upadhyay, accidentally fell from the fourth floor of the building to the second floor and hit his head. Seriously injured.
Police officials said that at around 2:50 pm, the police received information about the admission of Umesh Upadhyay from the Indian Spinal Injuries Center in Vasant Kunj.
“After enquiry, it was found that Upadhyay accidentally fell from the fourth floor to the second floor while inspecting the renovation work of his building around 10.30 am,” the police officer said.
The veteran journalist suffered serious head injuries and multiple other injuries. He was taken to the Indian Spinal Injuries Center around 11 a.m. but later succumbed to his injuries, police said.
Another police officer said that Upadhyay's family is not currently living in his residential complex as it is under renovation.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences over the journalist's death.
“I am deeply saddened by the passing away of veteran journalist and author Umesh Upadhyay ji, who made valuable contributions in the field of digital media and television.
“His death is an irreparable loss to journalism. My condolences to his family at this sad time. Om Shanti!
NDMC vice-president Satish Upadhyay said his elder brother Umesh Upadhyay was injured after falling down at his house in Vasant Kunj in the morning.
Police said an autopsy and legal proceedings have been initiated and further investigations are ongoing.
