Sandip Ghosh removed from chair at RG Kar Hospital after crime came to light
Sandip Ghosh, former dean of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, was suspended by the West Bengal health department a day after he was arrested for alleged financial irregularities at the medical institution during his tenure.
“In view of the ongoing criminal investigation against Prof (Dr) Sandip Ghosh, former Dean of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata, Prof (Dr) Ghosh has been suspended under 9 (1c) of the West Bengal Service Rules (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules, 1971 with immediate effect,” an official notification read.
The former principal of RG Kar MCH was detained by the police for eight days on Tuesday over alleged financial irregularities at the medical institution. Ghosh's “personal bodyguard” Afsar Ali Khan and two traders who had supplied supplies to the hospital, Biplav Singha and Suman Hazara Hazara) has also been arrested by India's Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
After the crime came to light, Ghosh was sacked and reinstated in the same position at the National Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata within hours by the Mamata Banerjee government, before being placed on indefinite leave. Corruption investigation.
Dr Akhtar Ali, the hospital's former vice-president, had made numerous complaints of financial irregularities at the hospital during Ghosh's tenure as principal.
The CBI's special crime branch is probing the rape and murder cases, while the anti-corruption wing is probing Ghosh's role in financial irregularities.
