Victim's parents react after TMC refutes allegations of police cover-up of their daughter's murder and rape
In a series of twists and turns in the Kolkata doctor rape and murder case, the victim's parents on Thursday said they were forced to admit on camera that money was not given to them by the Kolkata Police. A day earlier, the victim's parents made shocking accusations against city police, saying they tried to cover up the case through bribes and rushed to cremate their daughter's body.
Notably, the Kolkata doctor's parents issued a contrary statement after the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) released a video in which the parents were purportedly heard saying that the police did not offer them any money.
The TMC on Thursday refuted the allegations of a police cover-up by the female doctor's parents, insisting that newly emerged footage contradicts their version as it shows the family was previously satisfied with the investigation. However, the family members quickly responded to the TMC's claims, saying that the video was forcibly recorded by the police earlier soon after the cremation.
'Trying to bribe us to rush her cremation': Kolkata doctor's parents
On Wednesday, the victims' parents and relatives claimed police were “eager to cremate the body and even offered money”. The doctor's parents have made strong accusations against the Kolkata Police, saying that on August 9, a senior police officer gave them money and asked them to sign on a blank piece of paper. They also claimed they were under great pressure to have their daughter's body cremated against their will.
“The police tried to cover up the case from the beginning. We were not allowed to see the body and had to wait at the police station for the body to be taken for an autopsy. Later, when the body was handed over to us, a senior police officer offered us money , but we refused immediately,” said the victim's father.
TMC refutes allegations against police
Reacting to the allegations against Kolkata Police on Wednesday, TMC leader and minister Shashi Panja said the parents' new video claimed that the allegations were false and blamed the opposition for the development of the victim's parents.
“On Wednesday, a video went viral online in which a police officer allegedly offered the parents money after the incident. Another video appeared in the public domain, with the parents making it clear that the claims were lies and that they only wanted to Daughter gets justice.
“We cannot imagine the pain of the grieving parents. This incident is very unfortunate and heart-wrenching and we all demand justice for the victims. However, there should be no politics here. We would like to humbly appeal that no politics should be imposed on the parents Pressure them to do anything.
