The German online weather website Das Wetter reports: “Up to 3 meters of new snow may occur at high altitudes in the Alps” and: “Even in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Oberstdorf, snow will fall from Friday. It may also turn white.
Europe has been basking in late summer warmth, but now the weather is changing dramatically, with so-called Vb weather conditions threatening to “put a state of emergency in much of the region.”
Some weather models indicate 200 to 400 liters of rain and snow per square meter over seven days. Parts of the Alps and eastern Europe are expected to be hit hard by flooding, especially parts of the Czech Republic and Poland.
“A sudden cold spell means that snow has already begun to fall above 1,000 meters in the Alps. And there is no shortage of supplies: up to 3 meters of new snow may appear at high altitudes – a situation that is only known in the depths of winter.” Ober Places such as Sturdorf and Garmisch-Partenkirchen are particularly affected, with heavy snowfall expected on Friday and Saturday,” reports Das Wetter.
Such large amounts of snow could mean the ground there won't see sunlight until next summer.
“The epidemic is serious in winter”
Meanwhile, German meteorologists Dominic Jung reported a “severe winter outbreak” in the Alps today in his daily video update.
“Snow may fall as low as 1,000 meters. On Friday and Saturday morning, snow may fall to 700 meters,” Jung reported, noting that the snowfall was “relatively early for this time of year. ”.
“It's unusual for snowfall to be so low in the mountains at this time of year. Occasionally you get snowfall at 1,000-1,500 meters. But at 700 meters, it's more of an exception,” Jung said.
