Energy-focused groups called on lawmakers in a letter Thursday to repeal the Biden-Harris administration's electric vehicle (EV) “mandate.” [emphasis, links added]
More than two dozen energy groups sent this letter to every lawmaker in Congress urging them to advance the Congressional Review Act (CRA) process for the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) light-duty vehicle emissions standards.
According to the Congressional Research Service, the CRA enables lawmakers to effectively override federal regulations if a rule-specific resolution can pass both houses of Congress and be signed by the president, or if lawmakers can seek to override a presidential veto.
“This rulemaking by the EPA clearly exceeds the scope of the regulatory authority Congress has delegated to the agency,” stated in the letter.
“While this overreach will be litigated in court, the Canada Revenue Agency's positive decision now will ensure consumers are protected today, rather than waiting years for this issue to be resolved through the court system.”
Specifically, according to the Associated Press, automakers can comply with EPA regulations if electric vehicles account for 56% of new car sales by 2032, with another 13% of sales being plug-in hybrids.
The Biden-Harris administration is destroying the cornerstone of our economy—consumer choice.
Although the Biden-Harris administration insists these regulations are not mandates for electric vehicles, Critics say the rules will effectively force manufacturers to increase production of electric vehicles, becoming a de facto mandate.
The Biden-Harris administration has set a goal of having electric vehicles account for 50% of all new car sales by 2030 as part of a broader green energy and climate agenda.
Despite billions of dollars spent and tight regulations, U.S. consumers remain hesitant to switch to all-electric models At the same time, manufacturers are losing a lot of cash on their electric vehicle product lines and are starting to abandon ambitious short-term production goals.
“The Biden-Harris EPA's electric vehicle mandate once again oversteps its authority, a move that shocks no one. By putting politics ahead of personal freedoms, this administration is destroying consumer choice, the cornerstone of our economy,” said Tom Pyle, president of the American Energy Alliance.
“What the Biden-Harris administration is trying to do with its authority is deceptive, ill-advised, and a gross overreach. While there will undoubtedly be lawsuits from those who stand on the side of consumer choice and economic freedom, Passage of the CRA resolution will ensure today’s consumers are protected.“
