Vice President Kamala Harris pledged this week to suspend the Senate filibuster to pass abortion legislation, but she did not say whether she would do the same to pass the progressive, multi-trillion-dollar Green New Deal, which she proposed in 2020. “As President of the United States, I am ready to get past obstructionism to pass a Green New Deal,” Harris said in 2019 when responding to questions about how she would “build trust” with Republicans who “rely on a fossil fuel economy.”

On Tuesday, Harris said she still supports “eliminating[ing] filibuster roe” a stance that cost her the support of West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin. Manchin left the Democratic Party in May but remains in the Democratic caucus and said earlier this month that he would support Harris, but he said abolishing the filibuster would “destroy our country.”
Without the filibuster, Senate Democrats would only need a simple majority of 51 votes to pass the Green New Deal, rather than a 60-vote supermajority.
Harris, who co-sponsored the Green New Deal as a senator, gave a vague answer about her stance on the proposal when asked last month.
“The most important and important aspect of my policy views and decisions is My values haven't changed” Harris said in an interview with CNN in August.
“You mentioned the Green New Deal. I've always believed, and I've worked hard, that the climate crisis is real, This is a pressing issue and we should apply some metrics including strict deadlines.
A top Harris attorney said the vice president would embrace progressive environmental policies if elected in November.
Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) declared In his speech at the Democratic National Convention, the Green New Deal “will be President Harris' vision.”
Since Harris became the Democratic nominee in July, her campaign has rolled back several key policies from the 2020 presidential campaign without explanation, such as providing a path to citizenship for 2 million illegal immigrants and passing universal citizenship. Medicare and a ban on fracking.
