Another victim of net zero:
Vauxhall plans to close its Luton van manufacturing plant in a move that will put 1,100 jobs at risk as Net-zero rules force it to cut sales of petrol cars.
Stellantis, the car giant behind Vauxhall, Peugeot, Fiat and Citroën, said it would focus on investing in its Ellesmere Port factory in Cheshire.
The company said the decision was taken “in the context of the ZEV mandate”, referring to Electric vehicle sales target Automakers criticized the policy as too strict.
Stellantis chief executive Carlos Tavares conducted a “strategic review” of its UK operations this year, saying the ZEV directive had made the UK a “very difficult market”.
The company's former UK managing director, Maria Grazia Davino, warned that the company could close factories if the government did not relax electric vehicle targets.
Car companies face hefty fines if they don't meet a target that requires 22% of sales to come from electric vehicles this year, rising to 80% by 2030. Reinstate petrol car ban by 2030postponed to 2035 by Rishi Sunak.
