Seeking: Doomsday warning system
Some experts believe we could reach a catastrophic climate “tipping point” within a few years. The British government, with the help of Dominic Cummings, is trying to prepare.

Author: Charlie CooperLONDON – Britain, like the rest of the world, may be on the brink of climate catastrophe.
If the worst happens, Whitehall will need a little warning.
So it's turning to scientific experts for help, and to the government-backed Center for Innovative Research, which also happens to be the legacy of one of the most controversial figures in recent British political history.

The multi-year, £81m project will deploy the robot – known to some experts as Wall-E, in honor of Pixar's robotic environmental hero – to monitor the effects of climate change in the Atlantic and Arctic. The funding will also be used for supercomputer modeling of historical climate data.
This will all be led by the Advanced Research and Invention Authority (ARIA), an independent agency funded by the government…

From the ARIA website;
From climate change to artificial intelligence, society faces challenges and opportunities that science + technology can uniquely solve.
who we are
Created by an Act of Parliament and sponsored by the Department of Science, Innovation and Technology, ARIA funds breakthrough research and development in untapped areas to promote new pathways for UK and world prosperity.
what do we do
We help scientists and engineers conduct research that is too speculative, difficult, or interdisciplinary to do elsewhere. ARIA's programs are developed and led by our program directors, science and technology leaders who bring deep expertise and a focused, creative vision for how technology can create a better future.

Imagine a scientific establishment dedicated to making climate science more speculative.
Normally I would favor major pure research projects. Sometimes, providing scientists with a large sum of money and guidance to explore roads less traveled can produce truly useful results. Who could have guessed in the early 1900s that all the otherworldly physics of Einstein's theory would lead to nuclear power, modern computers, and a near-perfect GPS system.
But more often than not, giving people a bunch of money without clear instructions on how to spend it results in pointless waste.
Sadly, this new ARIA body seems to me to be hopelessly damaged. The brief seemed heavily biased towards exploring a non-existent climate crisis. But let’s be optimistic—there’s always the possibility that those receiving funding from this new government agency will produce research of real value.
