Commuting in Maryland Thursday afternoon and evening could be hazardous, the National Weather Service said in a statement Wednesday night.

The department said there's a 30 to 50 percent chance of snow in the Baltimore metropolitan area and the northern Washington metropolitan area Thursday afternoon and evening, with up to a half-inch of snow on roads.

This will soon cover many roads with snow, causing dangerous conditions when driving on untreated surfaces, the statement said.

After 1 p.m. Thursday, there's a 40 percent chance of snow showers, with a high near 33 degrees.
