The Swedish Supreme Court ruled on Wednesday that Greta Thunberg and hundreds of other young activists could not sue the state in the Swedish court because what they said was not enough to resist climate change. [emphasis, links added]

The activists filed a class action lawsuit in the district court in 2022, claiming that the state violated rights set forth in the European Convention on Human Rights because they were not enough to limit climate change or mitigate its impact.

In 2023, the District Court asked the Supreme Court to clarify whether such lawsuits could be effectively heard in a Swedish court after the state requested the case to be rejected.

“The court cannot rule that Riksdag or the government must take any specific litigation. The political body independently decides what specific climate measures should Sweden take,” he said. The Supreme Court said in a statement Wednesday.

There are about 300 plaintiffs currently claiming to be Aurora Group and hope that the district court will order Sweden to do more to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
